SCinet Research Sandbox
In 1991, the SC conference created SCinet as a leading edge, high-performance network assembled each year as a platform for exhibitors and attendees to demonstrate new HPC innovations. As the research community begins to face the increasing challenges of data-intensive science, the SC conference - now more than ever before - is seeking to highlight major network research initiatives that will be critical in this new paradigm. Just as computational researchers are examining scalable computing and storage models, network researchers are developing innovations for improving science data transport that connect these computational resources.
The SCinet Research Sandbox (SRS), currently in its third year as part of the SC conference, allows researchers with innovative network approaches to demonstrate their ideas in the live environment of SCinet and to have their research published as part of the highly regarded, peer-reviewed SC Technical Program.
The SC12 SRS will this year include a 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps), multi-vendor OpenFlow network testbed (see http://www.openflowswitch.org). OpenFlow is a disruptive network technology that allows the creation of software-defined network policy. The ability to “program the network” stands to be a significant innovation in HPC, an arena that depends on, and pushes, the capabilities of network infrastructure. The SRS will also allow researchers access to a 100 Gigabit Ethernet national testbed to showcase research in areas like multi-layer, multi-domain hybrid networks, new network protocols including alternatives to TCP/IP, automatic classification of large bulk data flows, high-throughput middleware and applications.
