While special purpose processors have always existed, squeezing performance meant burdensome code re-writes and very high costs. Thus, the use of commodity processors for scientific computing was a compromise between cheaper hardware and portable code, and consistent performance. Gaming changed the economics of these special purpose graphic processors, but the advent of frameworks and APIs turned them into general purpose GPUs, whose architecture is ideal for massively parallel scientific computing. Oak Ridge National Lab will accelerate time-to-results by using Kepler GPUs to a peak theoretical performance of over 20PF in a new system named Titan. This presentation will show preliminary results of GPU accelerated applications on Titan and other details of the system.
