Many countries are committed to have supercomputers as a fundamental tool for their national competitiveness.=0A=0AThe Next-Generation Supercomputer Development Project was started in 2006 as a seven-year project under direction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan. Its objectives are to develop the world's most advanced and high-performance supercomputer (later it was named Kei in Japanese or K computer), to develop and to deploy its usage technologies including application software in various science and engineering=0Afields, and to establish a center of excellence for computational sciences as one of key technologies of national importance designated in the Japanese Third Science and Technology Basic Plan.=0A=0AThe K computer is located in the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) at Kobe, Japan. Installation of the K computer was completed by the end of August, 2011. After the system adjustments for the public use and for the early access by advanced users, the system is scheduled to be officially released as a high-end system for the national High Performance Computing Infrastructure (HPCI) initiative at the end of this September. The K computer broke a 10PFLOPS wall for the first time in the world with high efficiency in=0ALINPACK benchmark in November, 2011. It has also achieved more than peta-flops sustained performance in real applications. This powerful and stable computing capability will bring us a big step toward the realization of the sustainable human society and break-through in research and development we have never had. =0A=0AIn this talk, the development history of the K computer will be introduced and the overall features of the K computer and some results obtained by the early access will be given.
