Awards

Each year, SC showcases not only the best and brightest stars of high performance computing, but also its rising stars and those who have made a lasting impression. SC Awards is one way these people are recognized at SC. This page describes the various awards given at the SC conference each year.

ACM Gordon Bell Prize

The Gordon Bell Prize is awarded each year to recognize outstanding achievement in high performance computing. Administered by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), financial support for the annual $10,000 award is provided by Gordon Bell, a pioneer in high performance and parallel computing. The purpose of the award is to track the progress of parallel computing, with particular emphasis on rewarding innovation in applying HPC to applications in science.  For more information, see the ACM Gorden Bell Prize page.

Submissions for the 2012 ACM Gordon Bell Prize are closed.

IEEE Computer Society Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award

The Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award recognizes innovative contributions to HPC systems that best exemplify the creative spirit of Seymour Cray. The award includes a $10,000 honorarium. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, July 31, 2012.  For more information about the Seymour Cray Award including the nomination form for the 2012 award, see the IEEE Seymour Cray Award page.

IEEE Computer Society Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award

The Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award honors innovative uses of HPC in problem solving. A certificate and $2,000 honorarium are given to the winner.  For more information about the Sidney Fernbach Award, see the IEEE Sidney Fernbach Award page.

Nominations for the 2012 IEEE Sidney Fernbach Award are closed.

ACM - IEEE CS Ken Kennedy Award

The Ken Kennedy Award recognizes substantial contributions to programmability and productivity in computing and substantial community service or mentoring contributions. The award honors the remarkable research, service, and mentoring contributions of Ken Kennedy and includes a $5,000 honorarium.  Information about the Ken Kennedy Award is available at:  http://www.computer.org/portal/web/awards/kennedy

Nominations for the 2012 ACM/IEEE Ken Kennedy Award are now closed.

IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award

The Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award recognizes contributions to information storage systems with emphasis on computer storage systems.  The winner for 2012, Naoya Takahashi of Hitachi Ltd., has elected to receive the award at SC12.  For more information about this award, see the IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award page.

George Michael Memorial HPC Ph.D. Fellowship

In memory of George Michael, one of the founding fathers of the SC Conference series, this award honors exceptional Ph.D. students throughout the world whose research focus areas are in high performance computing, networking, storage, and large-scale data analysis. ACM, the IEEE Computer Society, and the SC Conference sponsor this award. Fellowship winners will be selected based on overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which technical interests align with those of the HPC community, academic progress to date, recommendations by their advisor and others, and a demonstration of current and anticipated use of HPC resources.

For more information see the SC12 George Michael HPC Fellowship page.

Submissions for the George Michael Memorial HPC Ph.D. Fellowship are now closed.

Best Paper

Each year, the SC technical papers committee identifies one paper as the best paper from the conference's technical program. The award will be announced at the SC awards ceremony on Thursday, November 15.

Best Student Paper

Each year, the SC technical papers committee identifies one paper as the best paper written primarily by a student or students and presented in the conference's technical program. Papers must be identified as student papers when submitted to be eligible for this award. This awardwill be announced at the SC awards ceremony on Thursday, November 15.

Best Poster

Each year, the SC posters committee identifies one poster as the best poster presented as part of the conference's technical program. The award will be announced at the SC awards ceremony on Thursday, November 15.

ACM Student Research Competition

SC hosts an ACM Student Research Competition as part of its research poster activities within the technical program. Up to three awards are given in both undergraduate and graduate student categories. The award will be announced at the SC awards ceremony on Thursday, November 15. For more information about the ACM Student Research Competition at SC, including the rules for being eligible to participate in this competition, see the SC12 Posters page.

Student Cluster Competition

SC12 will again host a Student Cluster Competition to showcase student expertise in deploying and using a cluster. The competition yields a spirited, yet friendly, competition. Teams of undergraduates compete in building a small cluster on the SC exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest sustained performance across a series of applications. This year, we have added a competition track based on the LittleFe platform to the traditional competition.  For more information see the SC12 Student Cluster Competition page.

The awards for the Student Cluster Competition Standard track and LittleFe track will be announced to the winning team at the SC awards ceremony on Thursday, November 15.
